The 40-minute test set for the second half of class on Tuesday, May 2, will cover material, not previously declared as to-be-omitted, through Chapter 5, Section 4. The "Calculus Required" portions of Section 5.3, for example, will NOT be covered, nor will Section 4.4 of the 9th Ed'n. The main concern of the test will be to assess your mastery of the material from Section 3.1 on, as the material before that was the focus of the previous test. Unavoidably, of course, mastery of that earlier material is likely to prove of great utility in demonstrating mastery of the more recent material. But, once again, the "Calculus Required" portions of Section 5.3, Section 4.4, and Sections 5.5 and later, will all be "out-of-bounds" so far as this test is concerned. [The Final Exam, on the other hand, will treat everything the course will have actually touched on as "fair game;" though here, too, the more recent material will, obviously, be the more interesting.] And remember: basic principles, well mastered, will always help you far more than a whole armory of isolated, individual, specialized techniques. Added 5/3/2006: A key to this test will be distributed in class May 4.
